Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder + 2GB Accessory Kit

Bought this for our son who is a senior in college majoring in music education. He loves it!

I bought the Zoom H2 for recording my band’s rehearsals and live shows. Based on the reviews I read, I figured this would be a handy little gadget for listening back to see where we could make improvements in our music. I have been pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of the recordings and will likely be using some of them for posting on MySpace and making our demo CD. This is not something I had previously considered doing until I heard the recordings. They are actually better quality than our “professionally” done recordings! Well done to the makers of the H2! You have yourselves a definite winner!

I have found the H2 to not only sound and record great, but to be very useful as well. There are numerous settings for recording. The unit has 4 microphones inside which allows it to record front and rear and take 2 and 4 channel recordings. That means you can record surround sound. When played direct from the unit via headphones it sounds great in true surround. I remember once I was recording a guitar melody in my living room and apparently my girlfriend had shut a door during the recording. Shortly after, I was listening to the recording and I heard the door shut which made me literally turn my head. There are settings to adjust the quality of the recordings that range from all sizes of Mp3 files, to 96kz 24 bit wave files.
The convenience of the H2 is very important and it greatly assists in songwriting, jamming, improvising, and memory. New music ideas and melodies often pop into my head and in the past many ideas were lost due to my inability to record them then and there. With the H2 if I like something, I simply record it in a high quality mp3 format (which takes up way less space than a wave file) and build on it or come back to it later. This gives you the freedom to record a melody and then add rhythm or a second part to it right afterwards, which makes songwriting much easier. The recording sounds great which is a big plus also. For improvising, I do the same thing, so if I have played a riff, or something I want to remember, I can go back later through the session and pick out the good stuff and play it more. Hearing your mistakes and style in clear audio can provide motivation for practice and props to your playing. I have also used the H2 for recording jam sessions with bass, drums, guitar, and vocals. This is very useful for the reasons above, plus you can provide your band mates with the mp3 files either on a cd or via USB to their computer then and there. I would even go so far as to suggest you could use this unit to record live performances (depending on the show) and then provide mp3s or a CD to fans afterwards or put the show on Youtube or your website. For instance, if you do acoustic sets this would work really well.
It comes with a wind screen, desktop stand, mike stand attachment, and usb cable. It uses SD cards which are cheap, reliable, and can hold hours worth of music and two AA batteries. The gain can be adjusted via a switch on the side for various recording (noisy) environments. While you can’t plug into it and record direct, I believe the H4 model does have more input jacks. I’ve had it for about a year now, and I have found it to be somewhat rugged and durable, though I wouldn’t drop it or put it somewhere it could get smashed as it is plastic. I would buy it again and have found it to be quite an asset to my music, both songwriting and learning.

I purchased this recorder for my husband. He is a trumpet player and loves to use it when he practices. Not only is it compact, but it’s recording quality is superior. It came with an additional piece that slides right down into a microphone stand… so he takes it on gigs. Not too long after he got it, we found that many of his musician buddies had it too. They all use them to listen to their gigs and rehearsals and rave about it. I think it is a must have for any musician or singer! Takes any size SD card and can record in mp3 format.

I got this for my husband, a drummer, to record his practice sessions and his band rehearsals. It’s microphone capability is amazing for such a small unit. Navigating the menu takes a little getting used to, but the overall ease of recording and downloading to the computer makes up for it. G4 TVs “Attack of the Show” Gadget Pron segment reviewed it, with high marks. It’s also recommended by pro musicians such as Peter Erskine. We also use it to record our kids playing around on the piano and drums! A great, handy unit to have on hand for on the spot recording. Made a great Father’s Day gift.
